Colin Bateman

Colin, an upland farmer in Cumbria, is currently lambing 900 ewes and calving 70 suckler cows on a rotational grazing system. He aims to represent the voice of farmers across the country. He is particularly interested in building farm resilience through the use of technology and modern grazing techniques.



Trevor Bellis
Trevor from Janan Meat brings more than 40 years’ experience within the retail and supply sector – having held positions ranging from store manager to category buying manager. He has also held senior positions within the Co-operative Group, Dunbia andVion  before joining Janan as Sales Manager. With a passion for the farming industry, Trevor is keen to play his part in delivering the best produce the UK has to offer.



Conor ColganConor Colgan

Conor Colgan is a pedigree Salers and combinable crops farmer in a family partnership of 830 acres in Northumberland.

He is originally from Northern Ireland, where he continues to farm. His father, as part of the Livestock & Meat Commission (LMC), contributed to the design of the first Farm Quality Assurance Scheme in the UK and helped secure valuable markets in Europe. Conor continues this family tradition of innovation in beef production. He has pioneered the use of Lean management principles in farming and is installing a Leader-funded ‘Precision Beef Farming
Facility’ for the purposes of breed improvement, grassland management and feeding trials.

Conor holds an MBA in Advanced Farm Management. He sits on the Governing Council of the
Institute of Agricultural Management and is involved in the local NFU.



Anne-Marie HamiltonGill Fine AHDB Beef & Lamb board

Anne-Marie has grown up on a family farm with suckler cows, finishing followers both in bull beef systems and extensively using conservation grazing. Following studying at university and working in agriculture, am now lecturing in livestock health, welfare and production at an agricultural college Anne-Marie is responsible for managing the college’s herd of suckler cows and flock of 250 breeding ewes and their use in the curriculum. Anne-Marie also has her own small flock of 100 North Country Cheviot ewes, with lambs being marketed through a boxed scheme as well as sold live via markets.




Laurie IbbotsonLaura Ibbotson

Laurie is from a farming family in the Peak District, North Derbyshire. Living on a traditional upland suckler cow and sheep farm, she has a very practical knowledge of cattle husbandry and is passionate about sustainable livestock production.

As the Commercial Director for Dovecote Park, beef processors for Waitrose, she understands the complexities of producing great quality beef from a commercial perspective. In her varied role she oversees livestock schemes and procurement (beef, veal and venison), as well as the sales and new product development teams.

Outside of work and helping out on the farm Laurie’s hobbies revolve around horses – both
breeding and competing – as well as participating in sports and fitness activities.



Adam Quinney – ChairmanAdam Quinney

Adam is the Chair of AHDB Beef & Lamb, having previously served as a Board member for AHDB Beef & Lamb (then EBLEX) between 2010 and 2012. He has held a number of other prominent industry positions such as a member of the NFU National Livestock Committee, Chairman of the NFU West Midland Livestock Forum, and NFU Vice President.  He is a trustee of the Studley College Trust and was the first English ASDA beef scholar. His farm at Sambourne, near Redditch, Worcestershire, comprises sheep, a beef suckler unit and a beef finishing unit.


James ShoulerJames Shouler

James is a fourth-generation farmer running a 350 acre mixed farm in Oxfordshire. He has a pedigree Simmental herd of 50 cows, which calve in both spring and autumn, and sells pedigree breeding bulls and replacement heifers into commercial farms.



Richard SpareyRichard Sparey

Richard is a third-generation farmer whose grandfather moved to south Hereford as a tenant in the late forties. He now farms in partnership with his brother and mother, running lowland and upland flocks of breeding ewes and aiming to produce all of his lambs off forage. This year he will be lambing 1,800 ewes in two blocks.

The partnership also run 120 suckler cows, with an emphasis on genetics and EBVs for both sheep and beef. The farm is also home to an Assured Finishing Unit and Richard grows a range of combinable crops and maize.

Richard has always been involved heavily in the Young Farmers’ Clubs and the local NFU, and is
looking forward to the new challenge of joining the AHDB Beef & Lamb board.



James TaylorJames Taylor

James Taylor runs 460 breeding ewes and 30 suckler cows as part of a mixed arable / grass ley system with his parents on the Broughton Castle estate near Banbury. James and his parents host school visits and run a weekly farm club for adults who attend local day care centres. James has experience of the strategy development process and has worked on numerous rural project impact evaluations over the last 15 years. He is currently strategy lead trustee for an international beekeeping charity.



Steve ThompsonSteve Thompson

Steve is a Business Unit director for ABP and has responsibility for the company’s flagship processing facility in Ellesmere, Shropshire. The certified carbon neutral site employs over 900 people and is a supplier of beef to some of the UK’s leading retailers and foodservice providers.

Steve comes from a farming background and has a thorough understanding of the farm-to-fork process following 30 years working in the food and agriculture sector, including 10 years spent working for the Meat and Livestock Commission (now AHDB).



Paul UnwinPaul Unwin

Paul comes from a farming background and was born on a mixed farm in mid Wales. He runs pedigree flocks of Welsh Mountain sheep with his wife in the south Shropshire hills. Recently Paul stepped down as the Chair of the Steering Group for the government-backed National Strategy for Additive Manufacturing focused on increasing the UK’s manufacturing productivity and adoption of advanced technologies. Previously, he was the founding CEO of the Stanmore Implants Worldwide Ltd, a globally renowned medtech company.



Robert VennerRobert Venner

Robert Venner is a partner with the auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt, where he is partner in charge of Sedgemoor Auction Centre. He is a member of the Livestock Auctioneers Association and current Chair of Meat South West.

He also farms a pedigree herd of Aberdeen Angus in partnership with his mother in Devon.
